Chains for Mtb - Ebike

Apr 10, The gaps between the rollers mesh with the teeth on a sprocket or chainring, to drive the transmission when turned. Shop BMX chains. The type of chain you need will depend on the type of bike you are riding. A number of different chain widths are available, to suit specific bike types such as BMX, or to fit different road and MTB drivetrains e.

Whatever bike you ride, chain maintenance is key. Chains will wear and stretch over time, and a worn chain will damage the teeth on your chainrings or sprocket. The amount of sprockets on your rear cassette — 9, 10, 11, or even 12 — is crucial.

A chain for an speed transmission will be narrower than one for a 9-speed, etc. Generally chains and cassettes from different manufacturers will be compatible with each other, although Shimano and SRAM chains will not work very well with Campagnolo cassettes, and vice-versa.

It is also worth noting that some chains e. Shimano require special rivets to rejoin them once they have been split, and the old rivets cannot be used again.

There is plenty of information in print and online on fitting a new chain and specifically on ensuring it is the correct length all new chains are longer than necessary and will need to have links removed. It is a straightforward job easily tackled by most home mechanics, but if in doubt, have a professional do it for you. All chains have a limited lifespan. Every time a link of a chain drops into the valley created between the teeth on a cassette, sprocket or chainring, two metal surfaces rub together.

Add in the grinding paste that a transmission attracts and multiply by the hundreds of times this happens every time you turn the pedals, and you have a recipe for wear and tear. As chains wear out they tend to stretch, eventually starting to skip over the teeth on the sprocket when under load, instead of meshing with them as they should.

Once this starts to happen it is time for a chain replacement and perhaps a new cassette and chainrings too, if the wear is considerable. However you can act earlier by using a chain measuring device to determine if your chain is beginning to wear — catch it quickly and you only need a new chain. Any more than that however and you are going to have to buy a new cassette and possibly chainrings as well.

Another — less accurate again — way is to measure by sight. Lean the bike against a wall, drive side facing outwards, and ensure your chain is shifted onto the smallest rear sprocket and largest front chainring. These are the most common types of BMX chains found on all kinds of bikes. Half-link chains are made from identical links that have a thick and a thin end. At the thick end they are the standard width of the chain equivalent to the outer link of a traditional chainand the link then narrows to the thin end, which is the equivalent width of the inner link of a traditional chain.

The logic behind the development of half-link chains is that less material needs to be removed in order to shorten them — a half-link rather than two half-links — so more precise adjustment is possible, and riders can get their rear wheel position dialled in to their preference. Chains are sold in standard lengths of 96, 98 or links so you will need to use a chain tool to get it the right size for your drivetrain before installation. SHOP chainreactioncycles. Andrei Newbie Mar 12, So I have a Specialized Levo, had it since late November On my local Specialized store, they told me today that my chain was stretched by 0. I found it a bit expensive maybe because they overcharge on their store. What chain do you recommend? Do I have to use ebike specific chains? Could I use any 11 speed chain with same length as the original one? I ride 6 days a week, mostly for commuting around town, with some jumps I find on route Thanks!

Mcharza Well-known member Mar 13, It is essential to use the best mtb chain lube to to keep your chain running quietly and smoothly. A lubricated chain will move with less resistance and the lube will prevent dirt from building up.

Dirt between the moving parts of a chain increases friction and wears down the chain faster. It will also grind away at the cassette, requiring both to be replaced sooner.

Best MTB Chains of 2020

At The Adventure Junkies we want you to be able to properly maintain your bikes and enjoy riding them. We have written this guide to the best chain lubes to help you keep your pride and joy running smooth and maximize the life of your drivetrain components.

PROS: Mix of synthetic oils and teflon to create a wax like finish, long lasting for a dry lube. CONS: Needs two hours to dry. PROS: Wax based, quiet and smooth shifting, biodegradable. PROS: Long lasting wet weather lubricant, repels water, resists salt. PROS: Long lasting in wet conditions.

PROS: Made from renewable materials, biodegradeable. PROS: Cleans the chain when applied, long lasting, chains last longer. PROS: The ultimate lube for all conditions, very impressive performance. PROS: Removes water, sticks strongly to the chain, will not attract dirt even in wet conditions. The choice between a wet or a dry lube comes down to the conditions that you will be riding in. A wet lube can be used in all conditions but is absolutely necessary for wet weather or winter riding.

The lube remains wet on the chain and as a result dirt will stick to it. Consequently, you will need to regularly clean the chain and drivetrain, otherwise the dirt will build up and wear the parts out faster. You should be able to get at least miles of riding from one application of wet lube. A dry lube should only be used when riding on dry trails. The lubricant in a dry lube is mixed with a solvent that dries on the chain, leaving only the lubricant behind.

Dirt will not stick to it once it has dried. You will not have to clean the drivetrain as regularly but you will need to reapply the lube more often.Login or Sign Up. Ebike Chain recommendation? Posts Latest Activity.

Comment Post Cancel. I'll be getting a hybrid with Alfine 8-speed IGH soon. Probably, I'd better go with an ebike chain from the start because I don't want to experience a chain snap. Sebz The two chains you recommended are not those specifically made for ebikes, although KMC has ebike specific products.

The two are as strong as or better than ebike specific chains? Look at the link, they are both ebike, BMX and single speed specific chains, so probably the best you can get! Although I didn't receive my BBSHD yet, I would assume that failure would be associated with poor maintenance and too much slack in the chain before chain quality.

Well that's my experience with my bike, 4wheelers and motocross. I deep clean my chain every km's, oil it every km and I verify slack every ride et re-ajust when necessary. Wippermann makes some chains specifically for ebikes, as well as "high load" bicycle chains. You'll need to pick on that matches your drivetrain, though.

A chain designed for an 8-speed 8 rear cogs drivetrain won't work on a speed drivetrain 10 rear cogs. Thoses Wipperman chain looks good HD Rockhopper.Forums New posts Search forums. User Albums New media New comments Search media. What's new New posts New media New profile posts Latest activity.
